I don't use Viber, but I have seen people use it (probably more so for voice calls than chat messages). According to wikipedia, as of Dec 2016 Viber had 800MM registered users, apparently mostly in Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia. Go figure. I guess it is a popular service.
