I usually stay at the JW Marriott but decided to stay at the Westin this time to use up my Amex Platinum Credit and found the Westin superior in every way, and plan to move all my Disneyland stays to Westin moving forward.
Firstly, the grounds are truly impressive. When you pull up to the hotel, it really feels like you are at a real resort, and for me more of the feel of a St. Regis rather than what you typically expect from a Westin branded hotel.
I was able to get an early check-in (Noon), proactively offered a 4 PM late checkout, and was automatically upgraded in the app to a 1 King Bed Deluxe Studio with Queen Sofa Bed and a Park View, around 500+ square feet.
Platinum Welcome Gift was choice of either access for 2 more guests to the Lounge, or Points (I chose points).
Breakfast was in the Lounge (for a Platinum) although because I was staying on Amex FHR I was able to get breakfast for two in the Tangerine Room.
Waiting for me in the amazing Studio Room was a welcome amenity with a macarons, tangerines and a san pellegrino
Given the room is in close proximity to Disney California Adventures, you get a great view of the incredicoaster and DCA, which really gets you into the Disney Mood. We also enjoyed the walk from the hotel to Disneyland walking alongside the borders of the park, through Grand Californian Hotel, and you are smack dab in Downtown Disney.
So why did I prefer this hotel over the JW Marriott. The hard product (grounds and rooms) are far superior. The JW is in my view has a feel of a 3.5 to 4 star typical city hotel connected to a Mall, and you don't really get a luxury resort feel.
In addition, the JW Marriott there are limited options for upgrades. You cannot use your suite upgrades at the JW Marriott to upgrade to a suite, and the typical upgrade one would be offered at check-in is to a higher floor, and a so-called park view (where you can make out Disneyland in the far distance), but the room you get is pretty much their standard room 300ish square foot room, with a poorly designed shower that leaks water into the bathroom.
At Westin I loved the Deluxe Studio, especially their big soaker tub, and had I stayed longer probably would have spent my SNA to upgrade to a suite.
I also appreciated the fact that the Westin doesn't charge any destination/resort fees, whereas JW Marriott charges you a $25 resort fee.
On check-in at the Westin was given a sheet outlining the Amex FHR benefits which are as follows:
Noon Check-in (Upon Availability)
Room Upgrade at Check-In (Upon Availability)
