The app's NFC function seems to be very finicky. I often have to try multiple times in different positions to get it to work. It also requires an Internet connection (perhaps to get the real-time list of invalid/lost Octopus cards), so sometimes after multiple tries I realise that it was actually the Internet connection that's broken.
