Economical for Qatar to fly only to KL & get anyone wanting to fly to Penang or Langkawi to use their One World partner, MAS.
Penang would love to have Qatar resume direct flights Doha to Penang.
But this won’t happen:
Qatar weren’t making $$ flying to Penang- which served Qataris flying onward to Langkawi.
& they’ve used excuse of Covid to stop Penang flights permanently.
Penang Airport has always been underused by international airlines, & I can’t see this changing.
Given that even KL is now mostly left over to the MH codeshare (QR only operates 1 out of the 3 daily flight these days), even less of a chance happening. Also considering they decided to open other new second tier cities i.e. KNO (perhaps more money to be made there?) and the ongoing aircraft shortage (still playing catch up even with the A350 resumptions) - probably won’t see PEN any time soon.
