To your last question-the simple answer is space. Even on an hour flight I'm uncomfortable in coach. I don't like being that close to other people and by the end my back hurts from leaning into the aisle. AA can keep their food/drink/entertainment, even legroom is not important to me, but I'll pay big $ for lateral space.
It sounds like you need to buy F to be more comfortable. I have some tickets that I get reimbursement for in Y. I purchase the Y seats and once I get the receipt I call and pay for an upgare to J/F. I submit the Y receipt and pay myself for the upfare. Even so , there's a sight chance I end up in Y because of of AAs stupid upgrade and availability issues in cases of IRROPS.
