In a few months, I will need to travel from Europe to Central America. I have never been to the USA and I would like to take the opportunity to visit Miami or New York while in transit. However, all flights I look up either have short transfer windows (like 2 hours) or arrive in the evening in the US, and I don't feel like walking around in Miami or New York deep in the night. The maximum would normally be <24 hours but it isn't set in stone. If you can find an AA flight from the US that is not operating daily there may be some wiggle room. The routing rules would likely prevent overly long or illogical routings.
For baggage check-thru the max is 12 hours - so take that into account.
