Anything else involving multiple reservation numbers or multiple overlapping check in/out dates is where the nightmares begin. Of course, the easy reservation to deny is the one in a completely different hotel because clearly the Bonvoy member cannot stay and pay at two different hotels on a given night and "stay and pay" is a T&C for an eligible reservation. Except this situation is where the previous posters who have crossed the timeline on their travels have highlighted problems with such stays posting because the IT thinks there are two stays on the same night at different hotels and it throws a wobbly. We have no answer to this.
What should be easier for the IT is multiple (or at least up to three) reservations at the same hotel that overlap but may have different check in/out dates that allow the Bonvoy member to get the points for all three reservations. However, these stays also cause the IT to throw a wobbly when they post and good luck getting CS to fix that on your account. Generally what seems to happen is that the shorter stay with earlier check out date posts first as nights and points and this precludes the longer stay with a later check out date subsequently posting. This is an IT programming problem that won't be dealt with. We have to be pragmatic about this otherwise it starts to impact mental health.
So where does this leave us? This entire thread acts as a warning to anyone who wants information on making reservations with overlapping dates either at the same or - shudder - another hotel.
1. If you want to keep things simple and not get entangled with Bonvoy CS then don't have multiple reservation numbers on your account with overlapping dates in any scenario.
2. If you want reasonable confidence that you will get points for up to three rooms which the T&Cs allow then include all of them on a single reservation number.
I recently had a week-long stay. I booked two rooms but had three reservations numbers. The first, a 7-night reservation for the second room, the second, a one-night award redemption for myself and the third, a 6-night paid reservation so ultimately two rooms for 7 nights checking in and checking out on the same calendar dates. The award redemption was for the first night.
When all was said & done, I received 7 EQNs, 14 with the double EQN promotion despite the award night wasn't eligible for the promotion. There were two charges to my credit card, one for each room. I was awarded points for both the 7-night and 6-night stays with the Elite Bonus. No CS intervention was required. Perhaps this was the property handling all the reservation appropriately and not posting to Bonvoy until all the reservations were completed.
When I was an Ambassador Elite, I was on a 5-night award in PHX but needed a night at JFK during that stay on night 4. I emailed the AE team explaining what my intention was as I wanted the points for the JFK stay. They had no issue adjusting my award to earn EQNs on nights 1, 2, 3 & 5 and I received the EQN and Points for the JFK stay on night 4.
