I think United strengthened the Pacific when they dismantled the NRT hub. Their fleet of 777s and 747-400s (and now 787s) helped them overfly NRT and go nonstop to many areas in Asia. It set them up for the major success they have in the region today.
It would be like saying DL squandered the Atlantic when they killed the 90s FRA hub. They serve Europe much more effectively today without having to connect to a 727 in FRA.
