The only useful ‘tip’ IMHO is simply for folks to call AirNZ and ask if R (or A) class is available before booking. QED.
If I had phoned, I would have said? I didn't bother phoning, BP was about 1/3-1/2 full both ways so I assumed R space was gone. I would be shocked if no other elite has lodged and upgrade already while it's been released, but perhaps I just got extremely lucky twice. I guessed they could add more if they wanted to but if they can't then yes I got lucky.
Either way, I was surprised at my good fortune, and wanted to let others know so they could be aware that it seems there could be still R space available in the next month as it was available for me. I do think that's a valid tip, in case it tips anyone into being willing to take a trip or not, getting to fly BP for a reduced rate.
