YVR International gates are essentially swing gates. But yes, in most cases, the late night departures to US will not have pre-clearance. Depending on your baggage situation, upon arrival, you will either go through a simple transit formality in the sterile zone (INTL -> INTL) or go through Canadian immigration (INTL -> Canada immigration -> INTL).
