1L was a perfect seat for my LHR-LAX flight. Hardly ever noticed anyone going to the lav, never noticed it was there when I didn't need it, and having it a few steps away was very convenient. One warning I will give is that 1D/F are definitely less than ideal, since the the crew was using the space above the console/footrest on 1F to house the water bottles and midflight snacks. This made it quite uncomfortable for me to even look over what was available, as you were basically entering 1F's space to access it. I suppose it makes sense if they are unable to use the galley behind the cockpit for this purpose, but I would not want to be in 1F in that situation. I would not hesitate to book 1A/1L again flying solo, but I would probably go for 3D/F or 9D/F if flying as a couple.
My wife & I sit in 1DF (or 1DG on 777) all the time as our preferred "two-seater" in these cabins. As you point out, the FAs pretty much always use the shelf adjacent to the bulkhead for snacks, water bottles, etc. I can only speak for my wife & me, but this doesn't bother us at all & pax accessing these amenities is barely noticeable.
