I agree about not spending the $60k. However there might be some oddball exceptions.
- Someone has a big Marriott event that gets you close to the threshold and earns 6x by paying Marriott. These don't always appear as a Marriott charge but can.
- Someone wants Marriott points to transfer to JAL to get high value there making this more palatable. JAL isn't easy to earn in the US and has high value on some partners like EK, or on their own awards which are also more available to MB members.
