I'm not sure which of the two schedules posted is correct. However, I don't agree with your sentiment; on that itinerary, preclearance doesn't help you -- it hurts you, because you need the time in YVR to go through US CBP. Without preclearance, that gets moved to EWR, where you'll have plenty of time.
