Marriott
Canyon Suites at Phoenician - 120k points - seems too much for my taste
Regular room at Phoenician - 66k points - seems okay
JW Marriott Desert - 60k
Residence Inn Scottsdale Salt River 33k - free parking and breakfast
Hyatt
Royal Palms - 29k
Tempe Mission - 9k - seems really low points relative to cash prices
Which ones have a good pool and garden to look at? Last time I was in Scottsdale as 20 years ago. How, we got two young kids. Should I spend more time outside the hotel instead?
What are you planning to do while you're there? The distance between the JW Marriott Desert Ridge and the Mission Palms is about 45 minutes to an hour (possibly more in heavy traffic). One nice thing about the Mission Palms is that it is right in downtown Tempe; heck you can take the light rail there from the airport if you want and you wouldn't need a car.
For one night though, I'd probably just pick a mid-range property near the Biltmore, unless the night is on your way to/from something, then find a location convenient for that. By the time you park and walk inside, find and get to your room, in my opinion the value of the resort is greatly diminished for a 1-night stay.
Depending when in October, the weather may still be warm, or could be comfortable to cool. A big front usually moves through toward the middle of the month, bringing an end to the summer heat. Again, the Mission Palms would be close that you could walk to Tempe Town Lake; there are nice pathways along the sides, and there are some electric boats that sometimes do tours.
