I think you see the airline business from quite a simplistic view.

You’re ready to pay (“bid”) $800 for an upgrade to business class but think that paying for it outright is too expensive?

I just purchased business class return flights on IB from Spain to SFO for €1700.

I’d never pay for economy first and then for an unsure possibility to upgrade to business separately.
