Why would the connecting flight or me currently having an economy seat have any effect on being able to bid on a business class seat? I've never read anything that the ability to bid on an upgrade is reserved for premium economy.
Clean point-to-point itineraries are easiest for IT systems to deal with.
PE cabins are small. There is a far higher chance that somebody booked in PE will be upgraded - due to a full or oversold cabin - than somebody booked in Y. "Bid for upgrade" isn't because IB wants people to get into the habit of booking Y and then paying a relatively small amount to fly in J... it's to get passengers on the flight to pay for an upgrade that might otherwise be given away for free to a lucky PE passenger.
