I did London to New York weekly for just under a year when I was 31 all in J and working for a consulting firm who were setting up a specialism in the US. I took the 8.30am (ish) on Monday and would be in the office early afternoon having checked in to my hotel and then take either the 10.30pm back on Thursday or Friday night to miss traffic. Back then I would always work on the outbound, have a snooze and wasn’t fussed about the food as it was an early flight. I didn’t really care about the jet lag in general and would always sleep quite well on the return. I also didn’t have kids so it was like a normal week without being in London and I had the commute down to a tee. A couple of things I learnt was the only reason to fly back was I found weekends in NY so boring when I had my own life in London so didn’t make the effort to make friends outside of work and those work friends would also fly back to their cities, Chicago, LA wherever or didn’t live in the city (which was more common than I ever expected at the time) so you would be alone. Which on the odd weekend I would stay over in NY I found it quite dull. Looking back I wish I had known about FT as I would be GFL by now. But you can’t really replace the change in relationships with friends in London who would call whilst i was in NY (or elsewhere post this) and constantly got from me I can’t make the pub Friday night or mid week so that massively changes things. Apart from that it was a great experience and a massive learning curve given we speak the same language but are very different culturally in work which helps these days in how to get things done.
