In the old days when I worked at Hyatt, it was possible to reserve a room without a credit card or advance deposit. It would be held until 6PM on the arrival date. In practice, if we weren't sold out we'd hold it all night. That was called a "6PM Hold reservation."
I can vouch for some Hiltons and Drury Inns still having this policy, but haven't seen at a Marriott for awhile.
