In the old days when I worked at Hyatt, it was possible to reserve a room without a credit card or advance deposit. It would be held until 6PM on the arrival date. In practice, if we weren't sold out we'd hold it all night. That was called a "6PM Hold reservation."

This sounds like a bizarre hybrid--a sneaky way for hotels to cancel reservations on sold-out nights without consequence.
