And that allows a hugely discounted hotel that many/most other airlines wouldn't even consider offering. $20-30 is really neither here nor there compared with most long haul airfares, even as a matter of principle It's also cheaper than buying lounge entry or cups of coffee and staying airside for 14 hours.

So initial disappointments and misinterpretations put aside, for a small price you are buying yourself an experience and set of memories by choosing that earlier departure from BKK. Land at midday, be in the hotel by 1/1.30, have a nice afternoon relaxing by the pool or beach, visit one of the museums and grab some cheap eats whilst wandering around the souk in the evening, freshen up in your room and head back to the airport at midnight after what should be an enjoyable interlude, ready to sleep well on the long flight to the US.
