As many above noted you can't basically get through TSA with wine/liquids. I travel with wine basically all the time (mostly domestic including Hawaii and Puerto Rico) for business and have a 12 bottle custom case that I check. I have been doing this for years now (gone through a couple cases) and NEVER have had a problem. Buy your wine outside of SFO (or Reno) as many above noted you'll have a much better selection. Occasionally I have found a good deal in duty free if I am traveling international. Be very careful if you back the wine in a standard suitcase it can end up being a disaster! I learned that the hard way years ago. It can be done but that is a whole issue to itself. International restriction can be checked out on other threads.
