Yes you can do that no problem, but I don't believe there is any benefit versus you just using your points to book the flights. He'll have his status regardless of who books the tickets. I would be curious whether there are any benefits of doing this, as my partner often books tickets for us using her points, whereas I'm the one with status.

I suppose if he has an Aeroplan credit card and you do not, then adding him to your family group would let either of you access the award ticket discount.
