I second the shoe repair shop if your heart is set on a zipper.

Have you considered Velcro? I had a bag lacking closures, and used two sets of 2" Velcro strips strategically placed across the top. It's not as full-proof as a zipper, but depending on the design of the bag it might be a more realistic option.
