You always should be booking directly with the airline, unless there's a large cost saving to be had...
My experiences of GotoGate matches other contributors. Even if they appear to offer a better headline price your journey through their booking engine will soon nullify that - as well as driving you nuts! (other so-called consolidators are available )

I start my search with Google Flights and buy from the airline at the end of the process.
