Depending on the airline partner, you may have better luck redeeming miles from the gateway city which may have multiple flights a day to your destination v. SFO or SJC which might have one with 0 seats. In which case, I would use the cert to pay for a staging flight to BOS (DUB), JFK (LHR), CLT (many destinations), PHL (many destinations).
