I would not recommend your suggested approach for the return trip - your companion has a good chance of losing the E+ seat assignment.
The PP upgrade waitlist is based on status, fare class and time of request. The OP’s companion will be behind all Silvers and higher with instrument supported (PP and miles/copay) upgrades, but ahead of CPU of 1K, Platinum, Gold and Silver.
