I did not visit the mall(s) nearby - though, I found the location walkable to a large park as well as some nearby restaurants. As for late checkout, unless I am asked specifically if I need it without prompting, I always ask for the desk to confirm my checkout time at check-in. Often, I don't need 4 PM and I ask for 2 PM to be realistic with when I plan to depart and provide the hotel with better estimates for upgrades for incoming guests the next day.
