A "B" and "8" are similar but different. The font they use for the "I" on the boarding pass for SFO is identical to a "1". Given there is not such thing as Terminal I and there is a terminal 1, some % of people will be confused.

I also disagree that there is an obvious limitation of one or two characters. There may or may not be such a limitation. If there is, they should fix it.
