In my experience, central booking has always been glacially slow, and individual properties are highly variable (even when actual service is great). Amanpulo for instance has never replied promptly to an email (in like 10 or 15 years) but the service at the hotel has been consistently very good or better. (Food being more variable.)
I wonder if that's why everyone goes through an agent. Planning my first Aman trip and I'm thankful that I don't have to deal with them directly (until I arrive)
