Finally, a way to easily show the limitations of the location. Google Maps released a new feature under layers that lets you see how far you can walk/drive in 15m/30m. As seen, you can't get anywhere except temples in a 15m walk. And Kyoto station is at the edge of the 15m drive circle.
We did not take public transit in Kyoto and mostly relied on taxis which may have masked some of the location’s shortcomings. However, I did really enjoy walking around the area immediately surrounding the Park Hyatt Kyoto which had made fun small shops and restaurants.
