This isn’t AA. There is no waitlisting a mileage upgrade award. Either the U space is available from an eligible fare at the time you process the upgrade (online or call) or you aren’t upgraded (instrument upgrades like miles or GGU certs are not waitlisted, just comp status upgrades). I would not waste money on miles or acquire them assuming you will be able to use them for an upgrade, EWR-SEA has “pigs are flying” chances of 3 U available in advance (you can check now, use the website, look for solid color F on 3 purchased fares, search for “miles eligible” for upgrade type).
