Not entirely true, and if you hold status of some sort and you miss the last flight they will put you on a competitors metal. Granted, OP took WN, which still (?) doesn't interline with anyone, so would be moot. But AA will put you on UA/DL etc. There was also an article that spelled some of this out for people if they are curious:
