I would add the above mentioned John's on Bleecker street as well for VERY good NY style pizza. And I think if you walk straight out of John's, cross Bleecker and continue down the short street that makes a T intersection with Bleecker for about a block you will next come to the intersection of Jones St. and W. 4th Street, where a famous album cover photo was taken, Freewheelin' by Bob Dylan. And I have walked down that street many, many times going to John's or elsewhere in the area and just found that out relatively recently.
I completely second this, we love John's. I have no idea if its the best in NYC, but we have about a 15 year tradition of always going to John's on our first night in the city on every trip. We just enjoy the vibe of this place, very old school. I'll never forget showing up on one trip and finding out they had started accepting credit cards; thought my head was going to explode as they had always been cash only
