Presumably, the OP has requested original routing credit to get AA miles on the original itinerary (or on the substituted AA flight to LAX). If he has miles in any Star Alliance program, he should also be able to credit his
UA flight to one of those programs. Those miles might not be worth exactly $35, but they should be worth
something.
