I guess you use a different definition of ”hospitality business” than I … it’s not uncommon that cards get replaced or canceled between the time a reservation is made and the first attempt to authorize a charge is made. I wouldn’t expect to hotels to just routinely cancel those reservations… unless, of course, the rates have gone up and they expect to be able to make more $$ by doing that.
