your bp being checked suggests you did go the wrong way, and of course highlights the utter stupidly of the hal agents doing the checking and their ignorance of how t5 works since they should have said something.
the purple signs for flight connections T5 should point a different way to flight connections t234.
exiting from a7 you should have gone right and followed the corridor around the corner, and then gone to the connections point on your left. You would scan your onward bp at the automatic gates then up the escalator and in to the airside departures area.
