I also agree that it's often just as cheap to buy a ticket. For example, for flights this Christmas from US - UK and then back from Sweden it's $1800 give or take for premium economy. Flights are available using Avios and would cost 132750 Avios plus $486 so if you value each Avios at $0.01 then you're looking at the same $1800 "cost" for a redemption booking.
Isn’t this how it’s supposed to work? You save $1,300 cash by using an equivalent in Avios, which have no value unless you use them. Sounds like a great deal and has a degree of flexibility that many would value too.
