Now this. I was in GVA (in fact Montreux) for a quite posh meeting where one of my colleagues would get a big prize and would give a speech until 17:00. Same evening I needed to move to Tunis and the only way to do this was AF 1043 leaving 20:40 connecting with a 1:20 hour layover to the last flight CDG-Tunis. Get a call around 14:15 that AF1043 will be delayed (in the end 1 hour), that they feared for my connection and if I would not like to take the 18:10 AF1343. 'Of course if you take AF 1043 and you miss the connection we will rebook you to tomorrow and give a hotel'. Since I connect in Tunis on separate tickets I decided this is too risky, and opt for the 18:10 flight, leaving the meeting 15:25 or so for a train arriving 17:00 at GVA airport, missing the acceptance speech of my colleague. Ironically, there was a (much cheaper) Air Tunisia flight GVA-Tunis direct, the only one per day leaving 18:00 that I decided not to take since I would miss the moment surpreme of the award ceremony, and in consultation with my department we settled on the more expensive Air France option.
If I had not taken their offer, I could likely claim EU261 (since >8 hours late in Tunis). I don't regret that given the circumstances I played it low risk rather than trying to get some refund putting me at risk for my next travel. But I guess there is no way to claim damages in this case, since they are all immaterial, and I accepted their offer. I may try a submission via their website and see if there is any goodwill though.....
Edit : PS sorry should have posted this formally at the AF thread since an AF case. But still an interesting situation in general I guess.
