Realizing this is all speculation, but if you're willing to divert or turn an aircraft around due to an unruly passenger because you're afraid or concerned about what they MIGHT do then you'd better secure them to a seat. And if you have them secured to a seat, then carry on to the destination and not disrupt 200+ other passengers. Get unruly, get handcuffed, zip tied, or taped to a seat until the aircraft lands. Their choice.
I completely agree with the sentiment but unfortunately that’s not the way our world works.
This incident is a blip on the radar, outside of this website and those passengers affected, very few people are even remotely aware this occurred.
I assure you, a handcuffed unruly passenger, secured to a seat for 7+ hours; flying across the Atlantic bypassing multiple diversion points just to continue to a given destination would be an absolute PR nightmare.
The media sensationalism and backlash from the flying public would cause some heads to roll within the corporate boardroom on that decision making process
