Has anyone taken a look at this
"85% bonus" promo on purchasing Aeroplan points?
Seemed like a large bonus, so I did the math. If you purchase 35,000 points + the 29,750 bonus (85%), it costs $1225. That's $0.01892 per point.
I looked up a random itinerary that I might fly. YOW -> YLW round trip, June 30 departure and July 7 return. Aeroplan cost is 68,800 points + $97.72 in taxes. Do the conversion, (68800 * 0.0189) + 97.72 =
$1398.04.
Those exact same flights, in the same fare class (standard), purchased in cash:
$1266.14.
So even with an 85% bonus to purchasing points, it's still 10% more expensive to purchase the points, and of course, you don't get any of the cash fare benefits like SQx.
Really goes to show how much of a rip-off the points purchasing is at the regular rate with no bonus.
