In some instances, the flight connections team send messages to the flight which are pickup up by the pilots and then passed on to the crew, whereby they (normally the IFM) will speak to the affected passengers to relay the message (generally about re-booking on to alternative services). But simply asking a random crew member about whether you will make your connection will only really get you a guess (albeit maybe an educated one...or not) rather than any concrete info you can rely on.
I totally agree. But in this case the relevant cabin crew member had, he represented, talked to the IFM, who had "been in touch with London".
