This, yes.
I've had trouble with WeChat in Shanghai, and with Alipay in Beijing, but they both ought to work...theoretically....

Best to just have both though; I'd consider it a MUST, to be honest. I've had my WeChat account temporarily frozen because of suspected fraudulent activity and the immediate remedy to verify the account didn't work.
So I used Alipay as a backup. Similar things happened the other way around too.
