In Beijing the predominant system for use is WeChat; that is for both payment and APP use: Beijing's Covid app stuff was a WeChat mini-app, for instance.
In Shanghai it's the other way around; Alipay is king.
This doesn't mean that either won't work in the other place, just that it's less common.
