Note that Delta doesn't even complete the charge until the refund window passes, so canceling while the charge is pending will prevent the credit from happening (no clawback, the credit will just not post), so you'll need to change/cancel after the refund window.
This only happens if cancel the same day as book. If you cancel the following day (but within the free cancel oeriod) then charge posts.

DL does till midnight day after purchase and on all tickets. AA/UA/OAL don't- AA requires purchase 2 days before flight to qualify, etc. The DOT rule actually only requires if ourchased 7 days prior.
