Your 24-hour refund is the worst idea as Amex will claw back the credit. Book any nonrefundable main cabin (not BE) Delta flight for 11 months from now and pay for it on Amex. Never cancel the flight. When you decide on a legitimate trip you want to take call Delta and use that dummy ticket to pay for your real ticket. Any difference in fare you can pay at that time or take an ecredit. Never ever let any money go back as a credit on the Amex.
