They couldn't fix it and we nearly missed our flight. They eventually let us travel to LHR (we had through tickets to the US) with some sort of boarding cards. But once in Heathrow we had to go to customer service, where they were also completely vexed with the situation. After two hours and nearly missing the second flight, they re-issued the tickets with the two names on separate PNRs. Lesson learned. I have never since booked exact same names on the same PNR. Either change it (in my case with a middle name) or book separately. If I were the OP, I would call and see about separating the booking into two PNRs.
That is what I am afraid the most :/ So they did not automatically cancel any of the tickets, but during the check-in it was impossible for them to do standard check-in. Do you remember if you linked BAEC numbers to the family members with the same name? But I guess knowing the rest of the story it would not help in this situation.
Unfortunately I cannot add middle name for neither wife or mom, because they do not have one and it would match the passport. I called the BA and the agent told me, that ti should be fine and if I would split it on separate bookings/PNR there will be a risk of automatic cancellation which sounds absolutely ridiculous. What if there are two John Smiths who have never seen each other but are traveling on the same flight?
