Yea actually I heard that my uni is fairly conservative about approving this kind of travel, even when it's grant-funded rather than uni-funded, but I really don't understand why this is the case in a lot of academic institutions. It's literally called "business" travel ... just because we do academic work rather than for-profit work, we should be stuck in the back for long-haul flights? haha
To be fair, that could be said about a lot of companies not just unis. Unless you're in the C-Suite companies rarely fly their staff business even if they're heading over for work. They'd much rather give you an extra day on either side of your flights to "recover".
