There were two options. There was bid for upgrade and there was purchase the upgrade outright. I initially placed a lowball bid, but when the cabin filled to F2, I got anxious and just went for the purchased upgrade.

My UA reservation showed as out of sync for a while after the upgrade, but we had no problems. The return on a combination of LH and UA metal was unaffected.

Note that our upgraded LX flight was booked under the native LX code, not a codeshare.
