It seems it is his bank who flagged the transaction, not yours. If it is your bank querying the transaction, his bank will only see the hold is in place (even if your bank does not post the payment).
Query: what I am questioning is why you think BA's bank will know OP booked a DFW-Lagos ticket, in order to flag it? They can find out after, but they won't know it is a DFW-Lagos ticket until after the query. So, on what basis did BA's bank flag OP's card charge?
The guest turned up at the hotel and that's when we explained that we needed alternative payment options. it was a risk as in reality someone who is committing a fraud may just decide to do the same trick on a different card, but we took the gamble.
Regarding the query, on my Amex statement it shows the ticket number, the routing and the passenger name. So clearly this is passed on by the airline to the credit card company. When hotels pre-authorise we provide the credit card company with the check-in and check-out dates as well as the amount.
