You should be able to recheck your bags as your layover is less than 12 hours. If 12 hours or longer, you would need to take your bags. But if you check then through remember it will be sitting there for ~11 hours. If there is anything of any value in the bag it would better to schlep it along.
The 12 hours rule is only imposed when checking in with DL and when connecting DL to DL.
As OP will be checking in with KE, even if there was a further DL to DL connection after JFK, no 12 hour limit would be applied. Rather the normal 24 hour limit.
